  1. Theme
Back to School, FoolCompleted Oct 7, 2017

A new season for our club - a new year for students. Try to think beyond a group of kids entering a school and show your creativity. It could be shopping for supplies or waiting for a bus or anything that says it's back to school time. Good luck.

5 members made a total of 39 comments on 24 submissions.

See the Theme's gallery comment view for more information.

  2. Outing

We will participate in a tour of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery to take advantage of the Parks Canada Pass that gives a reduced price during 2017 for the Canada 150 celebration.

    Details:

We can shoot at the cannery for 1.5-2.0 hours.  THe tour will be approximately 45 minutes to an hour.  We can then go and grab some fish and chips or something along the waterfront for lunch and then continue to shoot arount the waterfront before returning home.

    Logistics:

Located at 12138 4th Ave in Steveston. The hours for the Cannery is 10-5. We can gather outside the Cannery at 9am. We will have a little under an hour to wander the waterfront before the doors open at 10am.  We will have the first tour of the day at 10am.

The Cannery Coordinator had some information that she wanted to pass along to anyone who is going to join us.  If you are bringing a tripod, they need to remain with the photographer at all times.  They can not be left unattended.  The Coordinator also wants us to be mindful of the general public (Do not photograph them or block passageways).  Also a reminder to dress warmly.  The building is built over the Fraser River and can be about 5 degrees cooler than outdoors.

Admission for the tour will be $3.90 per person.  The fee is charged so there is someone available to lead the tour.  The fee is reduced during the Canada 150 celebrations through the Park Canada Pass.

    Transit Users:

    • From New West Station, board a Westbound SkyTrain for Waterfront by no later than 745am.
    • Exit the train at 22nd Street Station and board a "410 Railway" bus at Bay #7. The bus departs at 808am.
    • get off the bus in Steveston at 4th avenue and Chatham Street
    • it is a short walk to the Cannery.

Since you will arrive at 9am, please assemble at the Cannery first.  You will have some early morning time to wander Steveston and the waterfront before the Cannery opens at 10am.

  3. Meeting

Light Painting Photography is the Art Form of using handheld lights to paint and/or draw in a scene while the shutter of a camera is left open during a long exposure photograph.  Bring your camera and a tripod to enjoy a workshop with Club members demonstrating different light painting techniques.

Take note:  unless the weather is frightful, we will be shooting outside.  So, dress warmly.

  4. Theme
Simply AutumnSubmissions due Oct 31, 2017

I got the inspiration for October's theme last night from the very interesting talk given by Brent Hayden. Although we don't all have the luxury of his equipment to do long exposures, we do have the equipment to do minimalistic imagery. This month's theme is to find an autumn landscape in all its glorious colours and shoot a simple, pared down image.

I have inserted a web link from a photographer who gives instructions and examples, and here is a PDF from another, and of course, for those who attended the meeting last night, we have the information given to us by Brent.

  5. Outing
    Fort Langley 2.0Nov 5, 2017

Here we go again..... This will be the club's second attempt to do an outing to Fort Langley.  Last year's attempt was prevented by the power outage and poor weather during the Cranberry Festival.  This time around, we will be taking advantage of the Parks Canada Discovery Pass which gives free admission to all Parks Canada locations for the entire year of 2017 for the Canada 150th anniversary celebrations.

    Details:

Located at 23433 Mavis Avenue in Fort Langley, you can drive to the Fort by using Highway 1 and get off at the 232nd Street exit going North.  Follow the “beaver” signs along 232nd Street until you reach the stop sign at Glover Road.  Turn right and continue into the village of Fort Langley.  Turn right on Mavis Avenue at the flashing lights, just before the railway tracks.  The parking lot is at the end of the street.  We can meet at the entrance to the fort between 0930-1000.  The fort opens at 10am.

Anybody who has not previously signed up to attend this outing and wishes to attend, please RSVP to outings@nwphoto.org so I know how many walking tour kits to bring with me.

Transit Users:  From New Westminster Station, board an Eastbound SkyTrain to King George no later than 0800am.  Get off at Surrey Central Station and board the “503 Aldergrove” bus from Bay 6.  Ride the bus all the way to Langley Centre.  At Langley Centre, transfer to the “C62 Walnut Grove” bus from Bay 6 and get off at 96ave and Glover Road.  It is a short walk to the fort.

    Logistics:

Our first stop of the day will be the Fort Langley National Historic Site.  We can tour the fort for 1.5-2.0 hours and then move into downtown Fort Langley for a walking tour.  We can discuss a lunch or snack stop along the way.   Do you have a Parks Canada Discovery Pass??  Please bring it with you to show at the admission desk.  I do have extra passes available but only a limited amount to use.

  9. Meeting

It’s time for our Seasonal Pot Luck Dinner and Silent Auction plus Entertainment Galore!

There’s no pre-set food list – we just wing it in the true spirit of pot luck and it usually works out well. Bring an appetizer, main or veggie dish, salad or dessert… whatever category you like! (Cutlery, serving utensils, plates, bowls, napkins, tablecloths, beverages and ice all are provided, plus silent auction bidding sheets and pens.)

If you're able to help with set-up, please arrive at 5:30 pm. (Any and all assistance is much appreciated.)

If NOT coming early for set-up, members are asked to please arrive by 6:00 pm, in time to put out their shared food and silent auction items. Remember: Auction donations can be new or "gently used" items and don't need to be photography-related. Check your bookshelves, basements, closets and cupboards… for as they say, One man’s junk is another man’s treasure!

Dinner starts at 6:30, and feverish auction bidding carries on throughout the evening... Don't forget to bring some bona fide Canadian currency or a cheque, so you don't miss out on great bargains while helping to beef up the club's equipment fund.

Members are always invited to bring guests (friends, spouses, lovers…). Hope to see you there for a fun and relaxing evening with your fellow (and fellowette) photographers! (Note: no meetings after this evening until Tuesday, January 2nd)
