OUTING - FRONT STREET FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

The City has been closing off traffic to Front Street in New Westminster on the weekends. They say it is for walking, wheeling and biking, but really … it is for Photographers.

“On Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from July 4th until Labour Day weekend, no motor vehicle traffic will be allowed on Front Street between East Columbia and Begbie Street from 8:00 am-8:00 pm. This includes truck traffic, which traditionally has lower volumes at weekends and during the summer. Trucks and other traffic will be detoured to alternate routes.”  The Labour Day weekend, 5-7 September, will be the last weekend to take advantage of the traffic-free environment.

This outing covers from the end of the Sapperton Landing Park, down river to the entrance to the Quay. It gives us an opportunity to photograph the underside of the bridges in safety, to examine the parkade from various angles and to study the interesting back details of many of New Westminster’s older commercial buildings. There are also still businesses along Front Street, many of them with long histories, and some who are providing services on the weekends.

Because Front Street has been closed off for many weekends, people have been coming out to enjoy the experience in different ways. Often musicians have taken to performing along the street under the cover of the parkade.

We never know what we will find when going to the Front!
