I like how the subject is framed between the two big rocks. The b&w suits the 'solitary' feeling in this image.
The background of the photo seems overexposed. I would suggest to tone down the highlight and increase the shadows.
The photo was taken in the morning. The background is not overexposed. It appears overexposed because of beach fog and is part of the photo. Could not be avoided.
I like the framing of the rocks. Using black and white really brings out the texture of them
Wonderful image of natural light. Great frame and my eyes are drawn to the person in the middle of the rocks. Beautiful that it is in black and white.
The sense of depth in this photo is excellent.
This is a unique take on the theme, illustrating the use of that soft, misty light. Lovely textures, a clinic on using the full tonal range, and a nice intimate composition.
Very nice panoramic view of the Alouette
There isn't much interesting in the sky. Try cropping out the sky down to the top of the ridge on the left to create a panoramic aspect ration
Great colours and leading lines! An unusual point of view.
Wonderful leading lines and layers of colour. Great composition.
The fields are looking good, very nice converging lines! Is this shot taken with a drone?
Yes it was.
Great leadiing lines drawing my eyes all the way to the snow mountains. Like the colour tone too.
A powerful use of leading lines. Wonderful rich textures. And, an excellent illustration of how rich colours can be under that soft, cloudy light.
The story might be even stronger if there was a figure on the path or bench.
Great subject matter, humourous setting, nice balance with the mirrored structures
I find the sky and the bright area on the right distracts from the primary visual pun. A tighter crop might put more emphasis on the structures without losing the context.
A fun photo and great title.
The background is such a strong visual I wondered if a tighter crop would be good for the story, although maybe context is important here?
I love this capture. Beautifully framed with the tree on one side and the mountain on the other side. Creates lovely shadows. Well done.
Instant point for making me chuckle! Extrodinarily crunchy texture. Nice exposure. Fun.
Intriguing abstract shape framing the water and wave action
Reduce the highlights a bit to hint at more of the details in the brightest areas and lighten the shadows a bit to hint at the texture and context of the framing natural arch
It's very dramatic! I like the jagged edges of the rock framing the ocean.
I wanted to look around the rock to get the full effect of the sunshine on the water. I wonder what it would look liKe if that were centred in the opening.
A study in the power of contrast. The interesting framing creating an engaging shape that attracts the eye.
The image would be 100% stronger if you have been able to have a boat or some sort of subject on the water. While you have that great frame, the subject beyond lacks any place to rest the eye, and there is little story.
Very nice outline of Africa. This is a magical place!
Lovely panorama. Pleasing variations in tonal contrasts and the various greens and browns
I find the flat sky distracts from the overall ambiance of the image. Try cropping off half the sky, to just over the upper level of dark gray clouds. Perhaps clone out the wind farm on the left
I did crop out some of the sky but I guess not enough.
Beautiful pastoral photo. I had to look up Steptoe Butte!
Wonderful capture of the shade on the rolling hills and vast landscape. Looks like a painting.
There's so many excellent photo compositions in this area! You've come home with an outstanding capture!
Return to this place again, if you can, as each season offers something different and exciting!
A very peaceful image. Nice composition and colour tone. Something you can definitely hang on the wall.
That dappled light that one imagines rolling across the landscape is perfect for the natural light theme. Lovely sense of vastness and distance. And yet, in the foreground we are rewarded with line and texture. Lovely image.
Nice capture of a warm sentiment.
Try masking the memorial plaque and lightening the exposure to make the name more visible, but not too prominent.
I'm always put off when subjects are not plumb within the frame. I would either emphasize the tilt to leave no doubt, or align the bench with the bottom of the frame
I can see the natural light aspect of the photo, but I am distracted by the slant of the bench and path.
Try straightening the image in editing?
A well suited title for the image...I can feel the warmth. Like how the light gently cast the shadows of the vase and bench.
It seems a bit out of focus and I would suggest to straighten the image, so the bench is leveled.
Very pretty dappled light. The shadow under the bench adds interest. A poignant subject.
The image appears to be tipped a bit. If you rotate the image just a bit to make the legs of the bench vertical, the image would be much stronger.
An interesting frame within a frame, variation of textures and almost monochromatic colour scheme
The bright band across the bottom is distracting. Try using a gradient mask to darken it to a level similar to the shadow under the wall.
The wall in full sun is blown out, try using a mask to reduce the exposure and recapture some of the texture.
The shadow in the lower centre obscures an interesting feature, try a mask to lighten the shadow.
There is an individual to the right of the rock with some equipment? Decide whether to keep them as an *Easter Egg* by enhancing the clarity or clone them out as a distraction
The brightness of the sunshine is set off nicely against the tonal quality of the image.
Perhaps a little less of the surrounding wall will focus more on the drama of the sunlight.
A lovely pool of light framed by that lovely keyhole archway. Rich, warm colour palette is very evocative.
The image isn't quite sharp anywhere. If you had a chance to retake it, choose at least one part of the image to be in focus.
Beautiful keyhole arch and nice, bright light to lead the eye through the arch!
Nice classical composition using *rule of thirds* technically well executed
When I first saw this image I spent some time trying to decide whether this was a photographer who had paused to bask in the morning sun; or a model not sure what to do with the camera they were handed. A different title, such as *pause and enjoy the tulips*, could reduce the ambiguity while making a comment on human nature.
Thanks for the comment on the title. I know I don't spend enough time really considering this and it definitely can make a difference to how the reader will interpret the image. Very helpful
I love the simple pleasure this invokes of the feeling of the sun on your face! Lovely colours with the focus on the main subject.
Such a wonderful capture! The layered colours of the tulips and the beautiful smile of this woman absorbing the beauty around her. You can almost feel the warmth of the sun. Great Image.
This photo puts a smile to my face! Morning light, colourful tulips and a pretty girl!!! They all add up to an exceptional photo!
This photo beautifully captures the theme of natural light.
A very happy image. The lady looks like she is enjoying the sunlight on her face. Beautiful background to support her cheerful smile. Nicely done!
Interesting, meditative composition technically well executed
A picky point. The shadows down the left have specks of highlights coming through. Could be confused with dust specks on the sensor. I would try to either crush them solid black, or open the shadow up a bit more to give the viewer a hint of the surrounding forest.
Thanks. My intention and editing were designed to suppress the surrounding forest to really capture that sense I had of the tree glowing alone. The idea of reducing the distraction near the edges is very helpful.
Good title! Perfect for the theme of Natural light.
Great image of the sun and natural light coming through the trees and creating this tree to light up. Beautiful.
Who doesn't love art deco? Technically well executed, capturing the range of tonality and colour of the copper decoration.
The image is very angular so it should be dead plumb in all three dimensions. Without out a tilt shift lens you'll need to rely on post processing to *starighten* the image within the frame
I love how the sun on this building is creating shadows on this image. Sun and shadee. Great frame and composition.
Beautiful texture and detail captured in this mottled natural light.
Very nice shadows on this iconic entranceway!! Well done!!!
The complimentray diagonals of the Arbutus branches make a very pleasing composition.
The marina in the background distracts from the main subject. Sometimes you can avoid a cluttered background by changing perspective, shooting upward into the sky for example. Sometimes that angle ruins the composition, so you could resort to a masking technique in post to select the background and then mute and blur it.
Thanks, yes I agree about the background. I have very limited post techniques available to me, but I see how my photo could have more impact.
I love how you captured the sun lighting up this beautiful arbutus tree. Great leading lines. Great composition.
An interesting composition, with the frame filled by the beautiful arbutus. The shape is very appealing.
This is a bit confusing for the theme. Most of the light is on the boats behind the subject. There is only the tiniest bit of light on the arbutus. If you had a chance to go back and shoot again at another time of day when the arbutus limb was lit up it would make the image even stronger.
The diagonal lines of the furniture and architecture and the fade to white all encourage the viewers gaze to settle on the subjects and the motto on the wall.
I'd like to see a bit more detail in the subject's faces, a little less high key? I find the ceiling fixtures and cabling distracting. Could they be cloned out to leave a blank ceiling?
I like the message on the wall! I wasn't sure how it fits the theme of Natural light?
Wonderful natural light filtering through this coffee shop. Great composition, two people in conversation with the chairs and tables surrounding them. Beautiful!
The over-exposure effect to highlight what would have been a darker corner of the scene is a strong technique.
I'm completely in love with your "high key" exposures. You have kept the key detail sharp and contrasty while letting the rest go soft to create an intimate setting for the subject and a sense of mystery in the scene. Would love a workshop.
This unique high key image with bright lighting and no shadows has a light, positive and airy feel. The addition of colour really highlights the subjects which are the two women engaged in conversation. Well done.
The blown highlights really work for this shot, directing our attention to the two friends!!
Interesting lines and texture leading up to the flare.
It's really tough to balance this sort of tonal range without sacrificing either the highlights or the shadows. Sometimes, exposing for the highlights allows you to minimize the blown out highlights while bringing up the shadow details in post. Digital images usually have a lot more detail recorded in the dark end than the light end
Very dramatic and suites the theme perfectly!
I love how you captured the sunburst of the sun reflecting off the ruins. Great natural light coming through the openings and the stairwell. Wonderful image.
A lovely example of using light to create drama. Just enough light on the front of the wall to bring out the textures. The light behind lends depth and draws attention to the stairs, which really suggest a story. The starburst on the corner lends more drama. Very nice work.
The contrast between the architecural and subject's style creates an interesting story line for the viewer. The light is mostly from the ouside edge to the center
To maximise the directional effect of the light I would try one of two options. Use masks to darken the center mullion to match the rest of the frame; darken the doors to be closer to the walls; and lighten the tops of the windows to blow out the details there. Alternately, mask the door and lighten the shadows on the door to balance with the ceiling and the walls.
In either case try feathering the vignette so it's less obvious.
A moodyimage and makes use of Natural light to emphasize the feeling. I wonder what the woman is looking at.
Lovely how the natural light is coming through the window and creating shadows in the room. Great image of the woman looking out. Well done.
Absolutely terrific image! Love your treatment, the haze over the window, the mysterious figure, it all adds up to a fine art photograph!
Print and frame it.
Nice composition and good use of light, creating a nostalgic look.
A composition that suggests a story. Lovely use of the falling-off light to create a shadow frame, and a sense of intimacy around the subject. that the light in the windows is blown out matters not at all. We are free to fill in the scene with whatever our imaginations desire. Wonderful detail of the textures on the walls. A very fine image.
This wonderful dramatic low key high contrast image has a wide tonal range with shadows that creatively conceal and reveal details such as in the stone flooring and walls. The photo has depth, and the woman in the photo is important as it adds interest and tells a story.
Strong sense of place; technically well executed
Try stepping back (or using a wider lens); getting lower down (child's eye view) and limiting the amount of sky to half the height of the house (unless you're shooting a cloud scape of course). Google the landscapes of Wyeth and Turner for examples of how this looks.
A strikingly simple composition. Well done.
Nice composition, having the cute little white house sitting on the side (rule of thirds) The clouds in the beauriful blue sky compliments the whole image. For some reason, this photo reminds me of the movie 'Up'. Very cute.
The quiet composition, and simple colour palette are very appealing. Nice control of the exposure on the house - bright enough to be a strong subject, yet not so bright that you can't enjoy the details.
Unique perspective
Try a more panoramic aspect ratio, and crop out the plain sky; the area above the mountain tops doesn't have much interest.
Lots of Natural light to spread around here! I'm curious where it's shot from.
A showstopper IMO. Wonderfully unique wide angle view of New West. Good depth of field, colour and contrast with great detail and sharpness front to back.
Great image of the buildings and bridge. You can definitely see lots of shade and sun. I like the frame of the water surrounding the land.
Props for the local subject. Drone shot? If not, I can't imagine where you were floating. The hard light lends strong shadows which highlight detail and seperate the buildings from each other.
Interesting perspective; technically well executed.
White is one of the most difficult 'colours' to expose for. You could use a post processing software to darken the sky and expand the tonal range of the statue - highlight the face and hands which form a triangle; and, darken the shadows of the folds in the robe
Great image of sunlight and shade on the statue. I love the clouds in the background.
Good title. Nice control of the exposure, shooting up into the bright sky..The strong light is coming from a direction that enhances the details of the sculpture. Very nice.
Interesting collage of elements; the unusal perspective lines make the viewer work to sort out the context.
Sorry, but I can't help but feeling there's something missing: a child? a puppy? a kitten? a COVID patient? or maybe that's the point?
Great image. I like the reflection of the clouds on the window and the light and shade.
A charming subject. Well seen
Interesting contrast between old and new growth.
When shooting close-up/macro try capturing the same image at different focal points, front, middle, rear and then select the one that best brings out all the details you want. Changing the perspective can also make large differences.
Great play of light against the dark and in the detail!
Great image. I love how the light illuminates the plant.
An interesting use of sidelight to highlight the textures of the "old" growth and to make the colour of the new growth really pop.
Interesting panorama and reflections of clouds on the water
To avoid bright sunlight blowing out the image try the "Expose to the Right" rule of thumb. Basically it means metering the brightest are of the image and exposing for that. Due to the nature of digital sensors it's easier in post processing to recover detail in shadowed areas than in highlighted areas. However black will still be black.
Great capture. I love how the setting sun is peaking through the dark clouds. Well done.
A great sense of the drama of the vast scene. The silhouette of the ship in the bright steak of light is an interesting focal point.
It's all about the storeyline. One that any pet owner can relate to.
The strong morning side ight gives a wide tonal range from front to back of the subjects. One option is to shoot an exposure bracket and select the best version later; exposure bracketing also gives you the option to do an HDR merge to expand the tonal range. Another option is to compress the tonal range by selectivly reducing the highlights and raising the shadows in processing software
I understand your point about the tonal range. I will have to do some research into how to do exposure bracketing. Also will try the highlight and shadow suggestion, but I don't have sophistcated postediting system.
Wonderful capture. The light illuminates the man and the dog. The image resembles a painting.
Beautiful composition and very effective use of early morning light.
Props for making me chuckle. A fun subject, really well composed. The light lends a sense of a warm afternoon that enhances the story. Very appealing.
Great character portrait, good technical execution showing texture in shirt collar and whiskers
Inevitably, with this type of light, you're going to lose details in the darkest and lightest areas. One option, if you're working with a cooperative sitter, is to have them hold a reflective surface at waist level parallel to the ground to bounce light up into the face; even a sheet of paper can make a difference for the camera sensor.
The Natural light really shows up the detail and texture in the beard and clothing. Very nice image.
I love how this is in black and white. Great capture of the shadows on his face.
A very strong and intimate portrait. A strong expression, and great eye contact with the camera. The light brings out the details of his beard and the texture of his hat. The shadows on the had add interest, and the shadows on the face add depth and a bit of mystery.
Even through they are in shadow it might be interesting to add a touch of clarity to make the pop just a touch. it is eye contact that makes a portrait really work.
Arresting documentry image, that reflects the spirit of the Burning Man event. The wicker statue adds the necessary context. Very good technical execution.
Try plaing with the colour channels to see if you could increase the tonal range a bit
Perfect title for both the man and the "Burning Man" event! I hope he had sunscreen!
I like that this is in black and white and how the sun is reflected on his sunglasses. It definitely shows sun and shade.
Yikes, I can almost smell the burning flesh; better call 911!!!
This has so many things to enjoy. The figure is perfectly posed for a story about light. The light is highlighting his body beautifully, and with the head lifted we have the face, surrounded by the dark brim of the hat. Perfect. The deep depth of field lets us get a sense of the location and interest in the background, including the other bikes. It is strong enough to balance the very strong subject in the foreground
If the setting had allowed it, it would be good to see just a bit more of the handle of the bike. It seems to be cut off at a slightly awkward place. But, I was reaching to find that nit to pick.
This compelling black and white image is terrific composition which has very good contrast, tonal range, lighting and a terrific subject. This was a excellent capture as the subject is pefectly at ease sunbathing au naturele looking upwards and turning away from the camera. The subject is perfectly placed on the left allowing the viewer to see the captivating structure in the background. Very good depth of field as the photo is tack sharp front to back. The reflection of the sun in the mans sunglasses is an added bonus.
Strong colour well framed by the silhouette building and trees makes an eye catching image
Try using post processing software to darken the blacks and darken the shadows to emphasize the silhouette, use post processing software to straighten the perspective lean in the building, crop a sliver off the top of the image to avoid the gap between the roofline and the top of the image
Great capture of the light of the sunset against the silhouette of the building. Wonderful colours and light.
Gorgeous colours in the sky! The column of balconies make a strong visual statement!
Beautiful colour palate.
Perhaps a vertical transform edit could straighten the side of the building.
That sihouette is a great subject to put in front of that lovely sky. It makes the image more intereseting than just another sunset shot. Nice crisp details. Nicely done.
There seems to be a slight tilt to the building. When the building is such a sttrong feature of the image, it would reward the time spent correcting the tilt (and slight barrel distortion)
Good color, good clarity.
Nothing about this light looks natural. The lack of background really hurts the image.
I love the contrast of colours against the white background.
Nice even lighting on the flowers. You've brought out the lovely colours and textures.
The vase is cropped in an awkward place. Consider either including all the base or cropping it out altogether. Leaving that little bit in distracts from your composition.
Interesting subject, nice internal framing with a dark side and a light side.
Try using post processing to lighten the shadows on the thunderhead. This should give it more presence without blowing out the highlights
Great composition and framing. Love the stormy clouds while the sun is setting.
It looks like a thunderstorm is on the horizon; how fortunate to have that beautiful coloured sky in behind!
An interesting use of a window to frame that lovely textured scene and light. The warm light along the left edge of the window makes the frame even more interesting.
There is a distorion in the shape of the window due to the wide lens of the "cellphone?" camera. Consider experimenting with some correction to make it look more "like life"
Eye catching subject, very good technical execution
Working with this light it's always a challenge to seperate the subject from the background, especially when the subject might disappear at any second. I suggest using a post processing software to select the subject and reduce the exposure slightly to increase the saturation and pop.
Great image of this colourful grasshopper. Love how the sun is creating the shadow of this critter onto the rocks.
Wow! Tremendous colours and textures in this. The bright light makes the shadow under the grasshopper a part of the story, and it works well to seperate the insect from the rock. Works great.
Because the light is so bright, the rock in the foreground pulls some attention from the grasshopper. Consider experimenting with a slightly tighter crop to make the subject pop even more.
Interplay of light and shadow, provides a narrative storeyline
All of the interesting interplay between light and shadow and the subject is in the lower two thirds of the image. Try a 16::9 aspect ratio and closer crop to draw the viewer's eye to the walker.
Thanks for the suggestions!
A perfect title for this theme. I love the contrast with the sun and shade. Great leading lines and framing.
A lovely study of backlit greenery, anchored with our tiny subject for scale and story.
Wonderful capture. I love the sun dappling through the trees and onto the front yard of this lovely home.
Wow, that's a beautiful estate! Full sunshine on the house draws the eye from the dappled lawn to the house!! Great work on your thoughtful composition!
Love the study of light and shadow on the lawn in front of the house, that seems to lead the eye into the image. The house appears in a pool of light that keeps it a strong subject . Nice long DOF keeping everything in focus. A very successful image.

Interesting storyline with the subject on the beach
The large bright area above the subject catchs the viewer's attention. Try cropping out the top 20% to keep the attention focused on the subject.
