Gerry Hiebert

About

Gerry Hiebert is a highly recommended guest speaker who presented the topic: “Photo Impressionism—or how I found my voice and learned to see what wasn’t there.” By sharing a number of techniques and processes, Gerry challenges his audience members to think outside the box and discover their own personal worlds of experimentation.

Gerry began shooting film 20 years ago, but got serious when he joined APAC (Abbotsford Photo Arts Club) about 10 years ago. This helped him to understand the basics of photography, but he also found adherence to compositional rules and technical emphasis frustrating and restrictive. Upon switching to digital, Gerry began experimenting and developing an impressionistic style.

Although he continues to shoot traditional street and landscape scenes (or anything else that catches his eye), the surrender of control found with camera motion is a siren's call, drawing Gerry to the impressionistic values of light, colour and motion, primarily through in-camera captures. He also enjoys creating alternative realities and abstracts in post-process.

Gerry's strengths are his ability to simplify compositions, minimize distractions to enhance narrative, create unique interpretations of familiar subjects, and constantly push the boundaries of his experience and imagination.
